Abstract

The aim of this study was to evaluate the productivity of 18 rustic swine faros (RSF’s) in Zapotitlán, Mexico City. The dominated pig type was the native hybrid. Interviews and a periodic visit each 15 days during 7 months were the procedures used to obtain the data. The average number obtained of alive born piglets and stillbirth ones were 8.7 and 1.16 each, both percentages were affected by the number of parities the sow had had. 950 gr was the average weight at birth and 6.95 the average number of weaned piglets. 215 days old and 84.2 Kg were the age and weight for sale. 72% of pig feeding consisted in kitchen wasteds and the rest were grains and industry preparations. 6.5:1 and 387 g. Were the feed conversion and daily weight gain average nubers. Although feeding systems, husbandry and equipment are not the most adequate to develop a sustainable pig farm, backyard pig farmers could obtain positive productive results like the RSF’s.
