The objetive of this article is to explain the rural family in the Puna Region in Susques Jujuy, Argentina, using a historical-etnographic approach. We used bibliographic sources and local oral history. The analysis is based on the past one hundred and fifty years, considering the influence of the Colonial period and the Catholic Church in the re-significance of the family life in the colonized groups. We analyze the changes the family unit in a one year period, taking into account the alternate presence of men and the woman's role in a matriarchal composition. We assume that the current Susques family is an expression of the syncretism, that nowadays operates rural life and that has been adopted by the modern Susques.
