Abstract

Water used in Mexican livestock comes from three main sources, municipal water network, surface water (rivers, ponds and lakes) and groundwater (wells), which have a variable quality, which puts the health and production of animals at risk, as well as that of people. Therefore the Federal Law on Animal Health, through the establishment of good production practices, provide that the water supplied to animals and used in livestock activities, be analyzed under the NOM-127-SSA1-1994, the which was published to regulate the quality of water consumed by humans, being difficult to fully comply with the livestock industry. In this document the chemical, physical and microbiological parameters required are established to ensure that livestock have quality drinking water and first contact that does not affect health and animal production, including operators.
