The tequila industry is highly important for the economy of Jalisco. It was in Jalisco where the industry originated in the 17th Century, and where it continues to boast the highest concentration of processes of production, bottling, testing, tequila tourism, and corporate offices. The sector’s growth led to a record production level in 2007, totaling 249 million liters of tequila. While this investigation is not strictly based on gender theory, we explore the realities and stories of women in an industry where the male to female ratio in certain areas has changed, and where men have left in great numbers due to the shifting structures of production in the countryside and the industry at large.
