This paper analyzes the factual possibilities of women who stay in Mexican rural communities behind male migration to the U.S.A to achieve more autonomy to make decisions and more benefits as a result of assuming new tasks and responsibilities in natural resources management. Based on fifteen interviews with female “curators of fincas”, carried out in three coffee grower communities in central Veracruz characterized by intensive out-migration to the U.S.A., it was possible to conclude that female empowerment processes depend on a set of multiple variables that outline fuzzy sceneries in which women autonomy is not a compulsive consequence.
