Análisis retrospectivo de la piscicultura de ornato en el estado de Morelos

Abstract

In this paper we analyzed the conditions and processes that caused the development of the ornamental fish farming in Morelos from 1984 to 2000. The analysis is supported by interviews applied at fishing farm’s producers and by information obtained at the public register and the ornamental fish farming appeared as an economic activity when ornamental importation decreased and the producers substituted low profitable crops by more profitable ones. The economic changes focused on farms’ growth, the production process improvement, and technology modernization. In conclusion, ornamental fishing activity is successful, its growth is conditioned by external economic factors and it has the potential pf a viable alternative for the Morelos’rural economy.
