Abstract

Whithin the context of widening differences between the rich and the poor, the question of knowledge has taken on unprecedented importance, either from a material point of view or- even more notably- in the arena of politics and economics. Anthropologist have long explored the role played by culture in the way different groups of people from bodies of knowledge; moreover, at times the processes these groups follow lead to inter-group conflicts. the purpose of this article is to discuss the role of culture in the formatión of knowledge from the point of view of political ecology. An ethnografhic experience involving the Mayas of Yucatan is presented in the description of a contemporary version of the rain ceremony (Chaa Chak) withinan environment of rapid, multiple changes in the areas of agricultural and industrial production.
