Abstract

As a consequence of precarious economy and long distances to market centers, rural families have maintained homo gardens (solares) as spaces to help their budget and carry out productive and recreational activities. Research was done in home gardens at the Hocabá community, which is located in the henequen area of Yucatan. Our objetive was to estimate net benefits and the products whit the highest revenue, probing that home gardens help household aconomy. We also analyzed solares`relevance when other productive activities have a low income. According to the results, home gardens that produce the highest revenue are those that combine two productive activities. Cultivating fruit trees and small livestock have the highest revenue. Fruit production is an economic wise activity because of low maintenance cost. solar's economic benefit is more profitable than other activities, whithout considering milpa cultivation. This unit of production results of great importance for family economy.
