Abstract

The organophosphorus pesticides are a group of organic substances derived from the chemical structure of phosphoric acids. They are used as oil additives, solvents, varnishes, electrical insulation, waterproofing, herbicides, fungicides, insecticides and others. Given its wide distribution and use in different industries, organophosphorus compounds can be taken accidentally causing intoxication. Therefore, this article seeks to present a summary of historical aspects, physicochemical properties, main applications and the sanitary and ecological damage in diverse ecosystems contaminated with pesticides. Concludes with proposals in the area of legislation, facing the challenge between the immediate benefits and the long-term consequences of using pesticides.
