They are used as oil additives, solvents, varnishes, electrical insulation, waterproofing, herbicides, fungicides, insecticides and others. Given its wide distribution and use in different industries, organophosphorus compounds can be taken accidentally causing intoxication. Therefore, this article seeks to present a summary of historical aspects, physicochemical properties, main applications and the sanitary and ecological damage in diverse ecosystems contaminated with pesticides.
