One of the principal deficiencies in the ornamental aquaculture is the cost of the nutritional supplies. This study was set up to evaluate the growth of Puntius conchonius during three nutritional feeds (for five weeks): a typical commercial food “El Pedregal ®”; and two low-cost foods (experimentally-created): earthworm-based (Eisenia foetida) and mealworms-based (Tenebrio molitor). In that order, the length and weight were: 3.00±0.23cm and 0.98±0.07g; 3.01±0.18cm and 0.98±0.08g; 2.78±0.22cm and 0.86±0.09, respectively; specific growth rate for length and weight were: 3.13 and 2.10; 3.13 and 2.10; 2.92 and 1.94 respectively; the feed conversion and its factor were: 1.92 and 2.35; 1.92 and 2.35; 1.93 and 2.44 respectively. The cost per kg of the diets was 16, 12 and 10 pesos for Pedregal ®, earthworm-based and mealworms-based group, respectively. According to these results, the most suitable feed for P. conchonius was the earthworm-based food. This feed induced similar growth to the commercial diet and far superior to the mealworms-based.
