Abstract. This article describes the construction of a methodological framework called Multifunctionality Index of Agricultural Production Systems (MIAPS), which allows to analyse four areas of multifunctionality (Territorial, Environmental, Economic and Social), consisting of twelve functions. The multifuncionality of agricultural systems in the south of Jalisco state was evaluated, showing that the index of multifunctionality increases when the following production systems are strengthened: spatial and temporal heterogeneity, conservation practices, local economy, job creation, food security, preservation of rural knowledge and social participation. We conclude that the miaps can be used as an analytical tool to monitor the multifunctionality of agricultural production systems over time; and to encourage decisions that impact on sustainable management of agricultural field.
