Abstract

Conceptual and methodological concepts are discussed regarding adaptive capacity in periurban socioecological systems facing processes and impacts of climate change, after considering a wide range of contexts. Particularly, three types of methodological approaches for implementation are described in relation to different geographic scales, criteria and indicators. The first is the study of peri-urban system itself which includes three stages of evaluation: 1) Initial (state and exposure); 2) Impact (sensitivity, processes and effects), and 3) Adaptation (actions, guidelines, options). A second methodological approach corresponds to the revision of generic and specific geographical scales involved in periruban areas. Finally, a third includes the choice of the determinants and indicators of adaptive capacity (generic and specific) in each geographical scale and study sector, which are distributed through three organizational levels: households, municipalities and region. Considerations for possible comparison are presented regarding the processes of change that are directed towards urban sustainability against the impacts of climate change, including criteria for the definition and selection of periurban geographies that relate to the performance of social-ecological systems in an integrated manner themselves, for example periurban agriculture.
