Abstract

Agricultural intensification in El Bajio is considered a form of agroindustrial development model in several regions of Mexico, promoted by public and private policies since the mid-twentieth century. One type of conventional agriculture with apparent success is based on agricultural supplies, fertile soils, irrigation systems, embedded in a dynamic national and international commercial network. However, this model has demonstrated the generation of impacts that weaken the agricultural ecosystem. The objective of this research is to characterize agricultural intensification, its limitations and identify social and ecological impacts. The preponderance of private interests, in demerit of public responsibilities, exemplified in the functional matrix of seeds, pesticides, fertilizers, machinery, grains and its market. Social and ecological impacts on the deficit annual groundwater recharge, poor water quality by the use of pesticides, eco-techno-dependency, are some of the elements elements that serve to question the viability of the model of agricultural intensification.
