Summary. This article focuses on family farming and its transition to sustainable agriculture. After describing some of the theoretical bases of family farming, it presents a case study fromwestern Mexico. The case study represents a group of farmers that is interested in the transition towards sustainable agriculture. A survey was applied to 35 producers participating in a training course on agroecology. From the case study it becomes clear that the transition to sustainable agriculture is a highly heterogeneous process, so training and rural development projects should take into account this diversity.
