Abstract

Abstract. The debate on world sustainability was begun at the Stockholm Conference in 1972. However, much of the current practice reveals that the conception persists that development sustainability is equivalent to sustained economic growth, sidelining the social equity and integrity requirements of ecosystems. This fact has thwarted the search for compatibility between macroeconomic objectives and well-being. As a consequence of this, many authors insist on the imperious need to modify our points of view and accepted values on well-being and nature when sustainability is being discussed. Nevertheless, one difficulty in facing this challenge is that well-being is a subjective notion, which has a value according to the possibilities of living the kind of life each person wishes. If we try to improve the well-being of people, we would have to ask ourselves what kind of things come into play when we refer to that term and in what way the notion is pertinent and applicable to the environmental. These questions guide the present essay, whose objective is to explore the concept of well-being and its possible link to the environmental.
