Abstract

Abstract. This review presents a point of view of the animal model (sheep and goats) in the approach of the different theories explaining sexual behavior in small ruminants. As the seasonal variation of reproductive activity, this is itself regulated by environmental factors. The effects of domestication on sexual behavior, which did not change the genetic characteristics, but allowed the genetic variability for breeding utilized specialized breeds. This leads to the seasonal availability of the products derived from these species (meat, milk and cheese), due to a more or less marked seasonality of births. The challenge for future research will be to build an integrated view of how hormones, genes, experience and preferences involved in sexual behavior.
