Abstract

Abstract. Morelos is the most important State of Mexico that produces ornamental fish. A study was performed to evaluate the factors that affect the ornamental fish production suitability. A questionnaire, designed to evaluate the performance of the infrastructure and operation, was applied to a sample of 53 farms from every production type and water basin of the region selected from the official census of 157 ornamental fish farms. Principal component analysis and later cluster analysis were applied in order to detect groups of farms profiles. On the other hand, multiple regression analysis was applied to determine the effects of the characteristics of the farms on fish production. The results showed that infrastructure and production variables were more important to determine farm groups. Four groups with non-homogeneous production infrastructure were detected. The farms from Morelos Mexico, do not meet internal nor external suitability criteria because of their low production, low species diversity offer, poor infrastructure, inappropriate bio-geophysical and institutional contexts which affects the performance of a number of production variables. Accordingly, a suitable farm should have appropriate access to roads, large species diversity offer, and access to official economical support programs.
