Abstract. This research focuses on the analysis of several factors that affect, positively or negatively, the sustained development of academic and professional competencies of students and graduates of the School of Veterinary Medicine in Mexico. To this end, a purposive sample of curricula (study plans and information related to them) of 16 veterinary education institutions was reviewed. One of these institutions is from the United States —whose curricula served as a referential basis and framework for this research— and 15 from Mexico. The study highlights three education and training approaches —depending on the arrangement of nine subject areas— to the character and dimensions of veterinary education in Mexico, in addition to pointing out different consistency factors, relevant to students’ and graduates’ competencies development that could serve as guidelines to improve institutional performance for the veterinary profession.
