Abstract. This study is an exhaustive analysis of the elements on hepatic gluconeogenesis in dairy cattle, where factors such as the adaptations of ruminal papillae, glucose metabolism, oxidation and β-oxidation of lipids and the formation and use ketone bodies, are essential components in the metabolic settings within the milk yield. The review emphasizes the structure of schematic models of biochemistry integration, especially during negative energy balance in order to achieve an appropriate balance between energy consumption by the animal, and the energy required for maintenance and pregnancy (in the pregnant cow), and the maintenance and lactation (in the lactating cow). Therefore, the revised information aims to make it more accessible understanding of the biochemical events that occur around calving, physiology and biochemistry of early lactation, events of vital importance to the health, production and profitability in dairy cattle.
