Abstract

Abstract. Physical food intake is studied in poor and non poor, metropolitan and rural households between 2000-2008. A variability index is built and variety is measured comparing corn intake looses with other significant dietary looses. Information comes from national home income and expenses interviews. Discussion handles around the effects of corn intake looses. Among the results are that theses looses are severe in non poor metropolitan households whose intakes in wheat, beans, milk, fruits and vegetables are being reduced. Corn, fruits and vegetables and meat intakes are maintained in poor rural households mainly because access to focalized programs and the receptions of migradollars. But these advantages cannot continue because extreme poverty grows and the northern frontier is being closed to illegal immigrants. General food intake will also suffer because the high international food prices, and growing food national imports and industrial consumption.
