Abstract

Abstract. Neo-liberal development in an era of globalization is a social process with multiple effects. Amongst others, many products are introduced in particular regions, affecting negatively regional sustainability. However, an important number of local products can be identified with a potential for buffering the negative effects of globalization; through fair trade activities in a determined region, its socioeconomic valuation can be warranted. The South Coast region of Jalisco, in Western Mexico, experiences the negative effects of neoliberal globalization reported for other regions. At the same time, great many local products can be found. This article presents the results of an exploratory market study of 32 local products, which shows that local products occupy specific market segments. Consolidating these segments can contribute to a strengthening of regional sustainable development.
