Abstract

The review presents scientific and technical elements of the transition period of dairy cows, where factors such as changes in microbial populations in the rumen, liver metabolism and the recovery of both walls of the rumen and mammary gland, are essential components in previous adaptations to lactation. The review emphasizes the need for special nutritional management during negative energy balance (BEN) in order to achieve an appropriate balance between energy consumption by the animal and the energy required for maintenance and pregnancy (in the pregnant cow) and the maintenance and lactation (in the lactating cow). Therefore, the revised information will concisely disseminate knowledge related to the understanding of energy metabolism. The compilation of published studies also aims to make it more accessible understanding of the biochemical and endocrine events that occur around calving, physiology and biochemistry of dry period and early postpartum, events of vital importance to the health, production and profitability of the dairy cows.
