Abstract

The Eslava River watershed is an important provider of ecosystem services for Mexico City. At the same time, it is highly vulnerable to urban growth. Consequently, it is important to improve planning of its territorial use. Towards this goal, a zonification proposal is presented built from a perspective of ecological risk, understood as the interaction between the vulnerability dimensions of the area of study and the action of a hazard. Vulnerability was modeled by delimitating Ecologically Sensitive Areas (ESA) in terms of their susceptibility to erosion and their hydrological and habitat values. The hazard against which the ESA were confronted was the potential growth of human settlements. Starting from this diagnostic, the watershed was regionalized based on the current policies of protection, restoration, conservation and sustainable use of natural resources and ecosystems.
