Abstract

The cultural importante of wild species is a field little explored and that shows how multiple ethnic groups accept their biodiversity by contributing alternative forms of preserving and fully exploting natural resources. Whit this aim a study of traditional storical relations between Sonora ethnic groups and a species of a high cultural content and aconomic value was takled. The exploration of traditional relations contributes keys to understanding differently the use of biodiversity on indigenous territories. From the viewpoint of each culture, in particular the bighorn sheep is not only autilitarian element but also a symbolic one that since the marginalization of ethnic groups and their distancing from wild fauna because of the reduction of species and habitats exemplifies a process of losing traditional knowledge that is currently valuable in the environmental context.
