Abstract. In Xochimilco exists an intense production of ornamental plants which requires substrates as the forest litter obtained from forested areas of Central Mexico. Alternatives to substitute forest litter are needed in order to diminish the heavy pressure on the organic matter of forest soils. The purpose of this study was to evaluate (1) the physical, chemical and microbiological quality of seven organic substrates (compost, coir peat, mulch and four mixtures), (2) their effect on the growth of plants of Phlox drummondii in Xochimilco (Mexico). The chemical properties showed a variability consistent with the organic nature of each substrate. The results indicated that mixtures of compost and forest litter + coir peat are alternatives to produce Phlox drummondii and reducing in this way the volume of forest litter used for flower production in the area.
