Abstract

We present the results of a comparison of knowledge between genders of gathered edible plants in Villa Talea de Castro of Oaxaca, Mexico, and Maradzika of Honde Valley, Zimbabwe. There were no statistically significant differences bet- ween men and women in terms of the number of plants known, though women knew more plants on average. However, there was evidence of gender differentiated knowledge that can be attributed to the gender division of labor and the gender construction of space. Women knew more vegetables and condiments while men knew more fruit and snacks. The attitudes towards gathered edible plants also differed between genders. This paper contributes information on patterns and particularities of traditional knowledge by gender, which can serve as a basis for the planning and implementation of policies on the sustainable use of plant resources.
