Abstract

Abstract: An indigenous soil classification at three zoque-popoluca ejidos of the county of Soteapan, Veracruz is presented. A set of soil characteristics identifiable by the producers to validate this classification is suggested. Twelve variables were used to describe the characteristics of soils identified by surveyed ejidatarios. Using multivariate analysis of clusters, nine soil classes have been identified in ejidos and three additional at region level. For each soil class its potential uses, associated crops and productivity are described. Results are compared to a classification obtained for a near zoque-popoluca county in another investigation. According to the production experience of ejidatarios, black, sandy black and grey soils are identified as the more productive. Based on these results, physical and chemical analysis, and microorganisms and plants diversity of each soil type are necessary to get a potential use proposal.
