The article seeks to explain the transformations in the last decades of the twentieth century in cotton production in Argentina’s province of Chaco placing it within the cycles of local agricultural exploitation, and the metamorphosis occurred in the national economy from the economic opening process that occurred with the implementation of the convertibility regime. The methodological approach is quantitative and the research level is descriptive comprising sectorial analysis of primary production. The secondary data sources covering local institutions (DEyC, DIES), national (indec, siia, ProvInfo) and international (fao, usda, Cotton Outlook). Among the most relevant results should be mentioned that the decline in cotton production coincided with the spread of soybean cultivation in subtropical zones and this cannot be attributed solely to the fall in international prices.
